Types of Crop Insurance

Pasture, Rangeland, Forage (PRF) & Apiculture Rainfall Index (API)

Rainfall is vital to all farmers and in Louisiana we know all too well how the slightest decrease in rainfall has a profound impact on the farm’s bottom line.  PRF and API are area based parametric policies designed to insure Louisiana ranchers and beekeepers against lack of rainfall for their area.  Coverage is based on the rainfall experienced in the area insured and not of the individual ranch and beekeeper, meaning an individual will not have to experience a production loss for an indemnity payment to be received. The deadline for applying for a PRF and API policy is December 1.

Livestock Risk Protection (LRP)

The cattle market in the U.S. is on fire.  The cattle prices are at an all-time record high, but what happens to the livestock producer if the market falls?   LRP is an invaluable insurance product designed to protect the U.S. livestock producer from market volatility. This product is extremely flexible and can be tailored to fit a rancher’s marketing program throughout the year, insuring the proper price floor is established when needed.  The application can be made anytime throughout the year; however, insurance doesn’t attach, and coverage isn’t provided, until you buy a specific coverage endorsement and RMA approves the purchase.

Yield Protection (YP)

Yield Protection insurance is very similar to an APH policy, except that it uses a projected price to determine coverage.  This policy offers a wide range of coverage options that can be tailored to suit each policyholder that insures against natural perils like drought, excessive moisture, hail, wind, frost, insects and disease.

Revenue Protection

Revenue protection insurance is the premier safety-net for row crop farmers.  RP provides coverage for both yield and price and offers a wide range of coverage options that can be tailored to suit each policyholder.   This policy too insures against a wide range of natural perils like a Yield Protection policy and also provides commodity price protection.  The policy does not provide coverage for a commodity marketing decision; however, it does provide a price floor that allows peace of mind to the policyholder when those marketing decisions are made.

Whole-Farm Revenue Protection

This is a robust insurance tool that Louisiana farmers have at their disposal that protects actual revenue for like the policy says, the whole-farm.  This policy is unique in that it can insure a plethora of unique Louisiana specialty crops like strawberries, nursery, crawfish, and even alligators. This crop insurance policy can insure up to 90% of your farm revenue or $17 million in revenue.

Crop Hail Coverage

Hail coverage is a private product that covers loss against the following perils of hail, fire, and lightning.  Many hail policies also insure content coverage, meaning after harvest the grain is insured while in storage at the policyholder’s first place of owned storage, not at a commercial elevator.

Wind Coverage

Wind Coverage is added to a corn crop hail policy and no two company’s corn wind policy is alike.  Louisiana Land Bank has access to crop insurance companies that have the most favorable wind coverage rates and the most farmer friendly wind coverage adjusters.
